With early rain threatening to once again postpone the season debut, the skies cleared and the Griffins showed up at Maryvale Prep in full force eager to play. Forward Ilaina Cochrane dribbled by several Matadors to open the scoring early. Ten minutes later, the Griffins led 4-0 thanks to a relentless press and the ability to convert chances near the goal.
The early substitutes continued the scoring ways with Chloe Cannon (7th) finding the back of the net on a lovely outside shot and Abisola Oyelakin (7th) scoring her first ever Griffin goal on a cross.
In the second half, the Griffins added four high quality goal. Cochrane chipped a ball over the keeper from a difficult angle, Gracie Madeya played a perfect through ball into the teeth of the defense that Kiki Greathouse neatly put away, and Ella Scheid (6th) hit the bottom of the crossbar leading to a handball penalty that Diane Scalise converted with authority.
The Griffins shared the ball well, especially in the second half, and six players finished with goals. Captains Kiki Greathouse and Diane Scalise, each scored two, Madeya and Cochrane also finished with a brace. The midfield worked hard to quickly win and keep possession throughout the game, especially Erin Tevis, Ashlyn Allen, Shae Helmer, and Nikki Senczakovicz-Gibo. The Griffins are still hoping to schedule a game before the winter break.
